FAQs, bugs, and identified issues

Hi everyone,

As you explore the new navigation, we're interested in learning about your usage patterns and preferences to enhance your experience. Since this is an experimental phase, we're rolling out a limited set of features, and there may be bugs or unintended behavior. Here are more details about these bugs or issues.

 Question  Response/Answer
Where can I find Project settings? We’ve disabled Project settings for this experiment. Disable the Chrome extension to access Project settings for your project. You can toggle the extension on/off at your convenience.

Why can’t I create a project using the Screenshot 2024-03-07 at 11.07.08 AM.png

icon next to Projects?

Selecting the Screenshot 2024-03-07 at 11.07.08 AM.png icon next to Projects leads you to a page where you can see the list of all projects in the Jira instance.

While the sidebar shows you a limited number of projects, this dedicated page lets you explore the list of existing projects and then create a new project.

Why can’t I resize the side navigation?

We’re working on fixing the side navigation and it might not work too well for you. Instead, we recommend that you use the Expand/Collapse button (collapse.png) on the top right of the sidebar.

Does the extension work on any other browsers like Brave?

The extension is available to use in Chrome browsers only, and we don’t support other browsers.

If you’ve found a way to make it work, we’d love to know more. So please share your experience with us.

Will the Chrome extension alter the use of Jira and its UI?

The extension will alter the Jira UI to show the same navigation options but in a different way.

Why can I still see the current navigation before the new navigation loads, especially when navigating to new pages?

This is a known bug and is expected. Please wait a bit for the new navigation to load.

Can I see single and multiple pages for App menus in the new navigation via the Chrome extension?

The new navigation via Chrome extension doesn't support the display of the menu items for Apps

Will the Chrome extension interact with the Jira instance via API?

The extension has to make API calls but will not change the state of the Jira page.

Why can't I access Calendars and Plans?

Not all menu items under Plans might be available in the extension for experiment.
Ex: The Calendar tab might be unavailable. You can toggle the Chrome extension off to use this.

Also, newly created Plans aren't available in Recents. You can access newly created Plans by selecting View all plans.

Why aren’t my custom colors for navigation displaying correctly on the Jira instance?

For this experiment, we only support the default color scheme in Jira. We’re still exploring custom colors for navigation.

You can reach out to your Jira admin to change the color scheme of your instance.

If you’re an admin, you can go to Settings > System > Look and feel > Navigation colors and select Revert.

Why can't I access the top navigation when I select some tabs in a project?

The top navigation disappears when you select the below tabs in a project:

  • Reports
  • Releases
  • Project pages

This is unintended behavior and a known issue.

Why does the top navigation move to the bottom when I select the Security tab in my project?

image (9).png

In the Chrome extension, the top navigation moves to the bottom of the page when you select the Security tab in your project. This is a known issue with the Chrome extension.

Note: To see the security feature for your project in Jira, you'll have to enable it first. Learn about the Security feature.

For Jira Service Management

Why can’t I see the number of issues for queues in the sidebar?

queues no.png

We’re still exploring this functionality, and you won’t be able to see the number of issues for queues in Jira Service Management projects.

If this is important for your work, we’d love to hear more. In the meantime, You can toggle the extension on/off at your convenience.

Why can’t I find Channels in my Jira Service Management project?

channels.png

We’re still exploring this functionality, and you won’t be able to see Channels in the sidebar for Jira Service Management projects.

If this is important for your work, we’d love to hear more. In the meantime, You can toggle the extension on/off at your convenience.

For Jira Product Discovery

Why isn’t the Chrome extension working for Jira Product Discovery?

We haven’t yet implemented the new navigation for Jira Product Discovery, and you won’t be able to use the extension for it.

Toggle the extension off if you’re using Jira Product Discovery projects. You can always toggle the extension on for other projects in Jira Software, Jira Work Management, and Jira Service Management.

We’ll keep adding more to the list of identified issues/bugs, so please watch this page.

If something isn’t working out for you, you can revert to the old experience by toggling off the extension. Once you've completed your task, you can toggle it back on to return to the new navigation.

We’d love to hear about your experience using the new navigation in Jira. Share with us:

  • Any tasks you found challenging to complete using the new navigation

  • How you've personalized your sidebar to suit your work

  • What’s working well for you

  • What’s not working well for you

  • Any other comments or suggestions, no matter how minor

Happy experimenting,

The Jira Navigation team

Brilliant, thanks for this article ...

BTW is the long term plan to update the Jira navigation natively after this experiment is done?

@Yatish Madhav Yes, we are looking to refresh the top and side navigation experience in Jira.  Results from this experiment will feed into the new design and experience.

I've noticed this last week - you cannot expand/collapse Assets object schema in the new navigation panel without navigating to that page. For example, I would like to navigate directly to a specific object type via side navigation but as soon as I click on expand arrow next to schema name, it automatically redirects me to that object schema. Same applies when collapsing schemas and/or object types.

I didn't see this listed but maybe I missed it.  The Jira product admin pages don't have the correct side navigation options.

I am a site admin and lead business\app admin for a company of just under 2k people, Agile train lead for 6 teams, and scrum lead for 2 teams, so I hit this change from a couple of different ways. After a few days and putting aside all of the unsupported areas and known issues, I'm still not enjoying finding things in the left-rail nav.

I ran through the activities checklist, and...

  • Resume your work - The context of what objects are being shown and why has been removed, so it's just a list of random crap.

  • Find what to work on next - No functional difference.

  • See what other teams are working on - No functional difference.

  • Navigate to a dashboard - I think I see less dashboards and lose the "create dashboard" button.

  • Find an issue - No functional difference. Calling the top-level parent "filters" is still misleading.

  • Find a list of issues - Either no functional difference or harder, depending on how you do it.

  • Save as a favorite object - No functional difference except that you can't un-favorite something from the navigation anymore.

  • Start a new project/initiative - I am going to assume clicking the "+" icon is supposed to pull up the create project wizard; assuming that worked, I would say no functional difference. If that's not correct, then I would say "worse".

TL;DR - nothing is better; some things are the same, some things are worse.

Some specific notes:

  • Looking at JSW projects, I see now that the project options have been moved to a horizontal view like JWM, and the only child object in the nav is the boards. This seems like an odd choice for a couple of reasons:
    • Most teams don't have more than one board, so the majority of people won't benefit from having access to this all the time.
    • The JWM horizontal nav bar was disliked from the get-go; it's unscalable, it's more clutter on the screen, and it breaks the UX pattern established since Jira was born.
    • The end result is a screen that looks, if anything, more busy than it used to.
  • The JSM project experience in the left-rail is clearly still under development, so not much feedback I can give. From what's there, it feels like there's no solid understanding of what is actually relevant though, which sort of dovetails with...
  • I keep asking myself "what problem this change is designed to solve" because I genuinely cannot figure it out. There doesn't seem to be a specific focus of the change besides "moar customization!!!". This is concerning because there's loads of evidence demonstrating what happens when you make a tool so customizable it has no recognizable shape on it's own...the most appropriate example being Jira itself.

I promise I did not intend to be so negative, but I do want you to have honest feedback!!!
