How do I set up a community group for my area?

Sally Evans October 3, 2023

Hi London,

Forgive me for coming to you for this but I would love to get a group set up that was more local to me. Currently the UK only has London or Wolverhampton groups. Does anyone know how this is done?

If we are limited to cities then Birmingham would be best (although I'm an hour away). Even better would be if I could set one up that covered a region. One for the Midlands as a whole. That way we don't whittle down membership too much by splintering into sub-cities.

Thank you very much for your help,

Sally

Hi @Sally

There are a number of other ACEs in the UK apart from London (and the somewhat defunct Wolverhampton one).  Have a look at https://ace.atlassian.com/communityevents/ and you can see more listed in the Europe section.
I am the joint leader of Cambridge ACE and have helped with setting up several new ACEs and would willingly help you with a more regional based offering as well.

To join as a community leader you should follow the instructions at https://ace.atlassian.com/leaders/

Feel free to send me a direct message if you want to chat further.

The other thing to remember is that it is a lot easier to manage if there are more than one leader for a location @David at David Simpson Apps might be a good first ask to find someone to help?

Thanks Phill,

I appreciate that. Yes, I can see other locations now. It looks as though I am not eligible to be a community leader because I am an interim between contracts. I'm just starting on my Jira and Confluence journey partly because I realised how useful they are, and also because they appear in a great many job requirements. This is my bid to close the gap and stay relevant :-)

I am going to read more posts on the community pages that you have guided me to, and then perhaps I will reach out and see if there's a group of people interested in connecting in the Midlands. With any luck someone will be able to take the 'lead' role, and one day soon I could join them.

All the best,

Sally

Hey Sally, where would your ideal group be situated?

I've also wondered about one for Nottingham. Not done anything about it though.

🙃

Hi David,

I live in the countryside <1 hour south of Birmingham or Coventry so to be honest, tagging it to a city is a bit of a pain. I'm also worried that making them too specific will limit how many member we get. So, ideally the group could be for 'Midlands' which would catch Nottingham for you as well. If we are forced down the city route I'd propose 'Birmingham' due to it's size and centrality. I'm open to suggestions :-)

I'm struggling to find the option to start a group either way.

Sally

This is a good place to start:

imo, I think "Midlands" would be best, then you can move around as required – Brum, Notts, Warwick, whatever. 🙃
